A 37-amino-acid cationic alpha-helical antimicrobial peptide (CAS 154947-66-7) cleaved by proteinase 3 from the C-terminus of the 18 kDa human cathelicidin precursor hCAP18. The sole human member of the cathelicidin family. Exhibits broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity via membrane disruption of bacteria, fungi, and enveloped viruses; additionally chemotactic for neutrophils, monocytes, and T-cells, and modulates innate immune and wound-healing responses. Studied in clinical trials for venous leg ulcers and inflammatory skin conditions. Not FDA-approved.
