Exact receptor target remains unidentified; hypothesized to modulate GABA-A signaling and hypothalamic-pituitary output, with reported effects on slow-wave sleep, stress-axis activity, and thermoregulation. Studied intermittently since the 1970s for sleep disorders and opiate withdrawal; no successful clinical development. Not FDA-approved.
