FDA-approved for treating methemoglobinemia, where it reduces ferric hemoglobin back to its functional ferrous form. Research interest centers on its role as an alternative electron carrier in mitochondrial respiration — accepting electrons directly from NADH, NADPH, and FADH2 to bypass damaged complex I/III activity and limit superoxide generation. Also studied as a monoamine oxidase inhibitor and modulator of inflammasome activity, with preclinical interest in neuroinflammation and cognitive aging models.
