Binds primarily the MC1 receptor on melanocytes to stimulate eumelanin synthesis and skin pigmentation. FDA-approved by Clinuvel Pharmaceuticals as Scenesse — a 16 mg subcutaneous implant administered every two months — for increasing pain-free light exposure in adults with erythropoietic protoporphyria (2019).
