A cell-permeable adenosine analog (5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribonucleoside, CAS 2627-69-2) that is phosphorylated intracellularly to ZMP, an AMP mimetic that allosterically activates AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). Downstream activation shifts cellular metabolism toward catabolic pathways — glucose uptake, fatty-acid oxidation, mitochondrial biogenesis — recapitulating aspects of exercise signaling. Not a peptide; studied preclinically as an exercise mimetic and in ischemia-reperfusion protection. Banned by WADA since 2009 as a metabolic modulator.
