A 29-amino-acid synthetic peptide identical to the active 1-29 N-terminal fragment of human growth hormone-releasing hormone (CAS 86168-78-7). Agonizes the GHRH receptor to stimulate endogenous pulsatile GH secretion via the hypothalamic-pituitary axis. Originally FDA-approved by EMD Serono as Geref in 1997 for pediatric growth hormone deficiency; commercial application withdrawn in 2008 and formal approval rescinded in 2009 — the FDA confirmed in 2013 that the withdrawal was not for safety or efficacy reasons. Still compounded in the US through 503A/503B pharmacies.
